The murder trial of Albert Ojwang has taken a significant turn with the presentation of crucial digital evidence.
On Tuesday, the Kibera High Court heard detailed forensic testimony from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), showing the deceased entered a city police station alive and responsive but was later removed from the premises in an unresponsive state.
IPOA Head of Forensics Joshua Mutua presented a reconstruction of events based on recovered surveillance footage and an examination of the station’s CCTV infrastructure.
The court heard that investigators visited Central Police Station on June 9, 2025, and discovered that the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) in the Officer Commanding Station’s office had been disconnected from its power supply.
A forensic examination of the DVR logs established that the recording device had been deliberately formatted on June 8, 2025.
Despite the formatting, forensic recovery techniques helped the investigators retrieve crucial footage. This footage is key to the prosecution’s efforts to establish a sequence of events surrounding Ojwang’s death.
The recovered recordings show Ojwang arriving at the station alive and being held in custody.
Critically, they also captured him being removed from the station while he was unresponsive.
This testimony came after a records officer detailed the circumstances under which the surveillance recordings were erased on June 8, strengthening the case regarding deliberate tampering with evidence.
The presentation of this evidence comes at a time when the state’s newfound transparency is drawing attention and raising critical questions.
The sudden release of details such as the CCTV footage has led to public scrutiny over what might be missing from the narrative.
The Star previously reported that Albert Ojwang was taken to Karura, where he was said to have met a senior police official and was allegedly tortured, causing panic.
