Eight Navy officers held as probe deepens into missing part of Sh8.2B drug haul

A fresh wave of concern has swept across the country following new details about a recent anti-narcotics operation at sea.

What started as a major achievement against international drug trafficking has now turned into a complex investigation involving members of the Kenya Navy.

The operation had earlier been widely praised, especially after a large quantity of methamphetamine was recovered from a non-registered dhow intercepted deep in the Indian Ocean.

However, the latest findings suggest that the initial success may have been overshadowed by serious internal challenges.

When the Kenya Navy stopped the dhow known as IGOR more than 600 kilometers east of the Mombasa Coast, the recovery of 1,024 kilograms of methamphetamine was seen as a huge win for security agencies.

The drugs carried an estimated street value of about 8.2 billion shillings. Soon after the interception, the Kenya Defence Forces confirmed that the entire haul had been secured and stated that internal investigations were underway to confirm every detail of the operation.

Their communication was meant to assure the public that nothing had been mishandled.

However, as days passed, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations widened its review of the incident.

Their enquiries took a different turn when it became clear that not all the seized drugs could be accounted for.

This missing portion raised immediate red flags and shifted the focus of the investigation from the intercepted vessel to the officers responsible for securing the consignment once it reached the hands of the authorities.

In a new development, eight Kenya Navy soldiers have been detained for an extra ten days as detectives try to establish the truth behind the missing drugs.

According to reports aired on Citizen TV, the arrests are linked to suspicions that part of the multi-billion shilling consignment may have been diverted after the operation.

The station boldly framed the issue with the headline stating that soldiers were arrested over drugs seized in the Indian Ocean, with the missing consignment forming part of the 8.2-billion-shilling haul.

The DCI has remained active in piecing together the events that followed the seizure. Their investigations are now focused on the actions and movements of the detained officers, who are believed to hold key information about how the breach occurred.

The situation has raised tough questions about discipline, accountability, and the internal systems meant to protect such sensitive operations.

This turn of events has cast a shadow over what was initially celebrated as a decisive step against drug trafficking. It has also placed the military institution under intense public scrutiny. Even so, the authorities appear determined to protect the integrity of the Kenya Defence Forces by examining every part of the operation.

The ongoing investigations signal a strong effort to ensure that any wrongdoing is uncovered and that trust in security operations is maintained.
