Kevin Waswa hosts OMO Wiseman on Political Ringside for a closer look at youth politics and support for Ruto

A conversation on Political Ringside offered a closer look at how some young Kenyans are thinking about current leadership and the road to 2027.

Host Kevin Waswa engaged OMO Wiseman, a youth leader from Kibra, in a discussion that reflected both support and concern among the younger generation.

OMO, who serves as the secretary general of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in his area, spoke about why he stands by William Ruto despite growing criticism from sections of Gen Z.

He made it clear that his support is shaped by what he observes on the ground rather than party loyalty alone.

In his view, changes in agriculture have had a visible effect, especially through subsidized fertilizer programs that have eased costs for some farmers.

He noted that when farmers are supported, the impact is often felt beyond rural areas, as it can influence food prices and availability.

To him, such interventions signal an attempt by the government to respond to everyday challenges.Infrastructure was another area he pointed to.

OMO mentioned ongoing road projects, including improvements linked to routes like the one to Malava, as part of broader efforts to connect regions and support economic activity.

He also referenced affordable housing initiatives, saying they represent an attempt to create jobs while addressing the housing gap.

While he did not claim that everything is perfect, he suggested that these steps show movement in the right direction.

The conversation also revisited last year’s protests around the Finance Bill protests, where many young people took to the streets over economic concerns.

OMO acknowledged that the demonstrations reflected real frustrations, especially around unemployment and the rising cost of living.

However, he argued that the period that followed has seen efforts to stabilize the country through a broader, more inclusive political approach.

In his opinion, stability is necessary if any meaningful progress is to take shape.

He expressed concern that some achievements may be overlooked in the wider debate.

He said there is a tendency to focus only on what is not working, without recognizing areas where gradual improvements are being made.

For him, a balanced view is important, especially when assessing a government that is still in office.

The discussion later shifted to local politics in Kibra and the role of ODM. OMO described the party as having strong structures across the country, with representation at different levels of leadership.

He emphasized the need for civic education, urging young people to take part in elections by registering and voting.

He encouraged them to evaluate leaders based on their track records rather than being guided only by online trends or public pressure.

He also spoke about the challenges faced by youth who openly support the government, noting that they often encounter criticism both online and in public spaces.

Even so, he maintained that political choices should be guided by long-term national interests rather than personalities or momentary reactions.
