The investigation into the killing of city psychologist Dr Victoria Mutiso has taken a new turn, with detectives uncovering claims that those involved in the murder were promised Ksh1.5 million to carry out the assignment.
Two police officers are now among the key suspects being pursued by investigators.
The officers are believed to have played a role in the operation and are currently on the run as detectives work to establish their whereabouts.
Investigators believe the two officers had agreed to share the alleged payment equally after completing the assignment. Forensic findings have also suggested that members of the alleged hit team wore police uniforms during the operation.
Another major lead has emerged after detectives traced a second Toyota Prado believed to have been used in the operation to Kisii County.
The vehicle was found hundreds of kilometres away from Nairobi, where Dr Mutiso was shot on July 29.
The Prado is believed to be the same vehicle that was reportedly stolen from a disputed piece of land. Detectives have identified the land dispute as a possible reason behind the killing and are now examining its connection to the people suspected of planning the attack.
The discovery of the vehicle in Kisii has helped detectives trace the movements of the suspects before and after the shooting. On Saturday, detectives and senior police officers visited Nderi and Thogoto police bases as they followed leads concerning the two officers who remain at large.
The latest developments came a day after DCI Director Mohamed Amin revealed that investigators had identified a police inspector attached to Nderi Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station.
The officer is suspected of being the link between the alleged financiers of the murder and the team that carried out the operation.Amin further said ballistic tests had linked a Jericho pistol recovered from Nderi Police Post to the killing of Dr Mutiso.
Detectives have relied on CCTV footage, ballistic evidence, vehicle tracking information and intelligence from different security agencies to piece together the events surrounding the murder.
According to investigators, two Toyota Prado vehicles were involved in the operation. One allegedly blocked the taxi carrying Dr Mutiso, while the other transported members of the alleged hit team.
Dr Mutiso died after being shot three times during the attack. A postmortem showed that two bullets struck her in the head while another entered through her upper back.
Investigators are now working to identify all those involved and establish the full chain of planning, financing and execution behind the killing.
