Fresh trouble for Wetang’ula as opposition seeks his removal from speaker’s seat

A fresh impeachment motion against National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is gaining momentum as opposition MPs intensify their efforts to remove him from office.

The Azimio Coalition has been vocal about its dissatisfaction with Wetang’ula, accusing him of bias in handling parliamentary affairs.

One of the key grievances is his decision that declared Kenya Kwanza the majority party in Parliament, a move that contradicted an earlier High Court ruling that recognized Azimio as the majority.

This ruling sparked outrage within the opposition, which sees it as an attempt to weaken its influence in the National Assembly.

During a high-level meeting in Karen, opposition MPs resolved to push for Wetang’ula’s removal, arguing that his leadership has been unfair and tilted in favor of Kenya Kwanza.

They pointed to his handling of parliamentary matters, particularly his stance on the defection of 14 Azimio MPs to Kenya Kwanza.

The opposition believes that instead of holding these MPs accountable for abandoning their coalition, Wetang’ula facilitated their move, further tilting the balance of power.

This, according to Azimio, undermines democracy and the integrity of political parties in Kenya.Minority Leader Janette Muhammad and Minority Whip M.O.O. have both publicly criticized Wetang’ula, accusing him of frustrating the opposition’s role in Parliament.

They argue that his decisions have consistently weakened Azimio’s representation, making it difficult for them to hold the government accountable.

The opposition also sees Wetang’ula’s leadership as part of a larger scheme by Kenya Kwanza to consolidate power and silence dissenting voices.

In addition to Wetang’ula, the opposition is also unhappy with Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss for her recent actions.

Boss sought clarification from the Registrar of Political Parties regarding post-election agreements, a move that Azimio views as an attempt to justify defections and further weaken the coalition.

This has fueled suspicions that Kenya Kwanza is using both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to manipulate parliamentary affairs to its advantage.

Reports suggest that Azimio is already preparing for Wetang’ula’s exit and has identified Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo as a potential replacement should the motion succeed.

Amollo, a respected lawyer and seasoned legislator, is seen as a strong candidate who can restore fairness and credibility to the Speaker’s office.

However, the impeachment process will not be easy, as Kenya Kwanza is expected to fight back and rally its members to defend Wetang’ula.

The political tension surrounding this impeachment motion is adding to the already charged atmosphere in the country.

Speculation about Raila Odinga’s future has also intensified, with some suggesting that if he fails to secure the African Union Commission chairmanship, it could shift the political dynamics even further.

This uncertainty is putting additional pressure on President William Ruto, who must navigate both internal and external political challenges.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Wetang’ula will survive the impeachment attempt or if Azimio will succeed in its push for a new Speaker.
