UDA faces Sh922 million tax evasion allegations as pressure mounts for action

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is now facing serious questions after new information exposed a huge tax evasion scandal.

Reports suggest that the party, which enjoys strong links to President William Ruto, failed to pay key taxes like PAYE and the housing levy, even though it received heavy funding from the exchequer. Whistleblowers have stepped forward saying top officials inside Ruto’s inner circle helped cover up the issue, making it harder for authorities to act.Between the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 financial years, UDA was given more than Sh922 million.

Despite this, there is evidence showing that the party ignored its tax responsibilities. This has made many Kenyans angry, especially at a time when ordinary citizens are struggling to meet high tax demands from the government.

Many feel betrayed, seeing that the same leaders who insist on tax compliance are the ones avoiding it behind closed doors. The scandal has reminded many people of George Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” where some animals ended up being “more equal than others.” It feels to many that while normal Kenyans are being pushed to the limit, those close to power are living under a different set of rules.

The anger is not just about the money lost but also about the feeling of unfairness and broken trust. Calls for investigations are growing louder each day.

Activists, opposition leaders, and even some UDA members are now demanding answers. Some insiders have warned that this scandal could badly damage President Ruto’s network of trusted allies. There is fear that some of those involved may have no choice but to step down or even face prosecution if investigations are carried out properly.

The situation has left many wondering whether the government’s promises of transparency and accountability were ever genuine. For a party that campaigned heavily on honesty and fairness, being caught up in a billion-shilling scandal is a major blow.

What remains Is whether the leadership will act tough on its own members or if it will continue with the cover-ups that many Kenyans are tired of seeing.
