Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has formally declared her intention to run for Nairobi Governor in the upcoming general election, marking her return to the gubernatorial race.
The well-known religious leader and former Starehe Member of Parliament has remained active in Nairobi politics and community affairs through her work with Jesus is Alive Ministries.Wanjiru made the announcement while launching her campaign under the Kenya Moja Movement, where she presented what her supporters are calling the Nairobi Declaration.
She said her decision was driven by the daily challenges facing Nairobi residents and the need for leadership that delivers practical solutions. Her message focused on improving basic services, strengthening accountability and moving away from what she described as politics as usual.
Education is one of the key areas in her agenda. Wanjiru said Nairobi must invest more in learning opportunities to give children and young people the skills they need to succeed.
She linked better education to youth empowerment, employment and the long-term growth of the county.
She also placed waste management high on her list of priorities. Wanjiru promised modern recycling programmes and regular garbage collection across all wards.
She argued that a cleaner city would improve public health while making Nairobi a better place to live, work and invest.
On the economy, Wanjiru said the county needs a stable and secure environment where businesses can grow. She pledged to support local entrepreneurs while attracting both local and international investors.
According to her, policies that encourage investment and create jobs will be important in unlocking Nairobi’s economic potential.
Inclusion was another major part of her message. Wanjiru said Nairobi’s diversity should be treated as a strength, with residents from different communities, religions and backgrounds receiving equal treatment.
She also called for stronger measures against corruption, saying public institutions must be accountable so that resources are used for the benefit of residents.
Her declaration comes as several political figures prepare to compete for the Nairobi Governor’s seat. Wanjiru brings previous experience as a legislator as well as her recent role as chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, a position she later left.
Through the Kenya Moja Movement, she is presenting her campaign as one centred on unity, good governance and practical improvements.
Whether voters will embrace her message will become clearer as the campaign gathers momentum.
Wanjiru has outlined a straightforward vision for Nairobi: better education, cleaner neighbourhoods, more jobs, inclusive leadership and greater accountability.
