Senior Al-Shabaab commander captured near Kenya-Somalia border during security operation

Fresh details have emerged from a security operation near the Kenya-Somalia border after Somali special forces reportedly captured a senior Al-Shabaab commander during a counter-terrorism mission in southern Somalia.

According to sources familiar with the operation, the raid took place in Baghdad town, located about 42 kilometres outside Hosingow in Somalia’s Sub Sector Central.

The area lies close to the Kenyan border and has been under close monitoring by security agencies because of suspected militant movements.

Security officials indicated that the suspected Al-Shabaab commander was arrested alive during the operation. Three other individuals believed to be members of the militant group were reportedly killed during the raid.

Images seen by our team showed a man believed to be the captured commander kneeling on the ground with his hands tied behind his back following the operation.

Investigators believe the group was moving towards Kenya when security forces intercepted them. Reports suggest the suspects were close to crossing into Kenyan territory when they were ambushed by Somali special forces.

During the operation, security teams recovered several items believed to be linked to the militant group.

These included an assault rifle, tactical equipment, multiple mobile phones, and documents that are expected to assist investigators in understanding the group’s activities.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by Somali and Kenyan security agencies to weaken Al-Shabaab networks operating in areas near the shared border.

The region has remained a key focus for security operations because militants have previously used remote routes to move between Somalia and Kenya.

Security experts believe the capture of a senior commander could provide valuable intelligence about the group’s structure, recruitment methods, communication channels, and planned activities.

Information gathered from the suspect may also help authorities identify other members of the network operating within the region.

Al-Shabaab has continued to pose a security challenge in East Africa for many years. The group has carried out attacks against the Somali government and has also targeted locations in Kenya, leading to heightened security measures along the border.

As a result, Kenya has maintained a strong security presence in border areas, with agencies including the Kenya Defence Forces working closely with regional partners to prevent infiltration by militants.

The reported arrest comes at a time when international support for peacekeeping efforts in Somalia faces uncertainty.

Recently, the United States announced plans to end its backing for United Nations assistance to the peacekeeping mission fighting Al-Shabaab.

Reports indicate that President Donald Trump’s administration informed the African Union that it would not support the continuation of the UN Support Office in Somalia beyond the end of 2026.

The office currently provides important logistical support, including food, fuel, water, transport, medical services, and other resources needed by troops involved in operations against the militant group.
