Every year, the government recognises and rewards Kenyans who have shown great patriotism and acts of heroism through the prestigious State House awards.
These honours are meant to celebrate individuals who have contributed positively to the nation in various ways, including service, bravery, and leadership.
However, this year’s list has sparked public debate after reports from The Standard newspaper revealed that sixty nominees have already been shortlisted for the forthcoming awards, and among them are several Members of Parliament and Senators.
According to the report published on Wednesday, 8th October 2025, the inclusion of some politicians in the shortlist has caused sharp reactions from Kenyans. Many citizens have taken to social media to express disappointment and anger, questioning the credibility of the selection process.
The names mentioned in the report include Didmus Barasa, the MP for Kimilili; John Waluke, MP for Sirisia; Fred Kapondi, MP for Mt. Elgon; and William Kamket, MP for Tiaty.

Their nomination has triggered mixed feelings across the country, with critics warning that the State awards risk losing meaning if they appear to reward the politically connected rather than genuinely deserving citizens.
Some Kenyans argue that such honours should go to individuals who have positively impacted society and upheld integrity in public service. Others claim that the inclusion of politicians accused of various crimes, including corruption, hate speech, and even murder, sends the wrong message about leadership and accountability.
The controversy has once again raised questions about transparency in the nomination process and whether political influence plays a role in determining who gets recognised.
While supporters of the listed MPs say everyone deserves a fair chance to be honoured if they have contributed to national development, many Kenyans believe the awards should only recognise individuals whose record is beyond reproach.
The debate continues to grow as the public awaits the official confirmation of the 60 nominees.
This issue has left many wondering whether the true spirit of patriotism and heroism is still being upheld in the State House awards.
