Police officer killed in shocking bow and arrow attack near State House Nairobi

A tragic incident near State House, Nairobi, on Monday morning, October 13, 2025, has left the police fraternity in mourning after one of their own was killed in the line of duty.

The attack took place at around 8:10 am along Dennis Pritt Road, close to State House Gate D, when a man armed with a bow and arrows confronted officers who were manning the area.

Witnesses say the attacker, identified as a 56-year-old man, approached the officers in a suspicious manner before being ordered to stop.

However, instead of surrendering, he suddenly advanced toward the officers, ignoring repeated warnings.

During the confrontation, the man aimed one of his arrows and shot Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka in the left ribs.

The officer fell to the ground as his colleagues rushed to his aid. Officers from the General Service Unit (GSU), who were stationed nearby, quickly intervened, subdued the attacker, and arrested him before he could cause more harm.

The area was immediately cordoned off as police began initial investigations into what led to the shocking assault.

Constable Mattanka was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for urgent medical attention, but despite efforts by doctors, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

His body was later taken to the hospital’s mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

The news of his death sent a wave of sadness across the National Police Service, with many describing him as a dedicated officer who lost his life while serving his country faithfully.

In an official statement, the National Police Service condemned the killing, terming it a brutal and unprovoked act of violence.

The Service also commended the officers on duty for their quick and coordinated response, which helped prevent further tragedy.

The statement added that an investigation had been launched to uncover the motive behind the attack and to determine whether the suspect acted alone or had other intentions.

“The National Police Service condemns this heinous act and commends the officers for their swift response, which prevented further harm. An investigation is ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack,” part of the statement read.

The police further extended their deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late officer, assuring them of full support during this painful period.

The Service described Constable Mattanka as a brave and committed officer who paid the ultimate price while protecting others.

His death serves as a painful reminder of the dangers faced by security officers daily as they safeguard national institutions and public spaces.

The police have since urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue, promising that justice will be pursued for the fallen officer.
