Martha Karua represents Dr. Kizza Besigye in Ugandan Court before Justice Baguma

Lawyer Martha Karua On Tuesday, 24, appeared in Kampala, Uganda, as the legal representative of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.

During the court session before Justice Dr. Emmanuel Baguma, Karua expressed deep concern over the deteriorating health of Dr. Besigye, whose condition has raised alarm among supporters and human rights advocates.

Speaking after the session, Karua highlighted the emotional weight of the visit, noting the courage of Dr. Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima.

She described Byanyima’s strength as extraordinary while acknowledging the pain she and her family continue to endure amid the ongoing struggle for democratic spaces.

Karua emphasized that the fight for democracy is not confined to one nation but is a shared responsibility across the African continent.

“The struggle for democratic spaces anywhere on this continent is a collective responsibility, and I will continue to do my part to fight for people’s rights in Kenya and beyond,” she said.

Dr. Besigye, a prominent figure in Uganda’s opposition politics, was abducted in Nairobi 465 days ago, an incident that has drawn widespread condemnation from civil society groups and political leaders across East Africa.

His detention and the conditions surrounding it have been described as deeply troubling by human rights organizations, raising concerns about freedom of expression and political participation in the region.

Karua’s visit underscores the transnational nature of democratic advocacy, reflecting a commitment to defending political freedoms and the rule of law beyond national borders.

Martha Karua reaffirmed her determination to support Dr. Besigye and champion democratic rights, signaling that the struggle for justice continues despite significant obstacles.
