Kuria dismisses Kalonzo’s 2027 hopes, cites risk of no commission in time

On Monday, June 30, Moses Kuria, Senior Advisor to the Council of Economic Advisors, reiterated his declaration that there will be no elections in 2027.

Kuria aroused debate with a caustic response to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who was emphatic that elections take place within the next two years, as mandated by the constitution.

The former Gatundu South MP responded on X, formerly Twitter, by telling Kalonzo that elections were unlikely to go ahead as planned due to a slew of legal and institutional obstacles.

“This morning, I listened to my friend Kalonzo Musyoka on Kameme FM. SKM questioned my statement that there will be no election in 2027,” Kuria said.

“The swearing-in of IEBC Commissioners has been stopped by the court. In another 39 days, we will start the 24-month countdown to the 2027 elections.”

On Monday, Kalonzo talked on Kameme FM, reinforcing the opposition’s commitment to overthrowing President William Ruto’s rule in 2027.

Despite criticism of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) recent choices of new commissioners and a chairperson, Kalonzo stated that the opposition would have to work with what they had for the time being, as long as elections were free and fair.

“They are rushing the NADCO report, which had specific recommendations. We are the opposition, and we were not consulted,” Kalonzo said.

“That is why we are calling it the William Ruto Commission.

Regardless, a William Ruto Commission is better than no commission. And the elections must be free and fair.”

However, in his response, Moses Kuria addressed recommendations made by the Kriegler Commission, which reviewed the disputed 2007 election.

The Senior Advisor to Ruto’s Council of Economic Advisors stated that the significantly delayed formation of the IEBC has reduced the likelihood of an election taking place.

“Kriegler told us that there cannot be a free and fair election if we don’t have a Commission two years before the election,” Kuria noted.

He also anticipated that based on previous instances involving the IEBC, the multiple court cases preventing the IEBC’s reconstruction could last until 2027.

In the absence of an election, the incumbent administration will have to stay in power until all legal challenges are settled.

Kuria concluded his online analysis with a shot at Kalonzo, a senior attorney, accusing the Wiper Party leader of dishonesty.

He feels the Wiper Party leader should understand the full legal ramifications of failing to reconstitute a commission on time.
