During an event held in Nyanza, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga spoke publicly about a proposal that he says was brought to him by fellow opposition leaders.
According to Raila, he was offered a political deal that involved him running for president in 2027 with the understanding that he would later support another opposition figure to take over in 2032.
The offer was meant to create a long-term succession plan within the opposition to challenge and remove President William Ruto from power in the upcoming elections.
The remarks, as published by Saturday’s Standard newspaper, have raised eyebrows across the political space. Raila said he turned down the deal, making it clear that he did not want to betray President Ruto.

This rejection has confused many of his supporters and opponents alike, especially considering Raila has been one of Ruto’s strongest critics over the years. His decision not to accept the plan is being seen by some as a shift in political strategy or perhaps a signal a bigger political chance.
Raila’s statement comes at a time when opposition leaders have reportedly been working behind the scenes on a plan to remove Ruto from office in the next general election.
Their plan includes fronting a strong candidate such as former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i or former Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka.
Both leaders are believed to have the political experience and influence needed to rally support against Ruto, especially if they get the backing of key figures like Raila Odinga.
However, with Raila refusing to participate in this succession plan, the unity within the opposition could be at risk. Some political observers believe Raila’s move may weaken the opposition’s strategy or cause internal conflicts.
Others think he may be positioning himself for something else entirely, possibly looking at a different political role like his recent push for the African Union Commission chairmanship.
Either way, his refusal to take part in what seemed like a carefully crafted plan sends a strong message.
The political direction of the opposition remains unclear. The rejection of this deal by Raila Odinga leaves many questions about the opposition’s ability to unite behind one candidate.
President Ruto and his allies are likely watching closely as these developments unfold, knowing that any split within the opposition could work in their favour.
