Jubilee Party names Fred Matiang’i deputy leader and endorses him for 2027 presidency

The Jubilee Party has taken a bold step in its political comeback by naming former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i as its Deputy Party Leader.

The move comes as the party positions itself ahead of the 2027 General Election, where Matiang’i is now officially endorsed as Jubilee’s presidential candidate.

The decision was reached during the party’s National Executive Council meeting held on October 30, which was chaired virtually by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, who made the announcement after the meeting, said the council had unanimously agreed that Dr. Matiang’i would represent Jubilee in the United Opposition coalition.

“We have received and formally accepted Dr. Fred Matiang’i’s application for his presidential bid, and the NEC has agreed that he carries our flag,” Kioni said.

“We have appointed Dr. Fred Matiang’i as our Deputy Party Leader going forward,” he added. The decision marks a significant moment for the former ruling party, which has been struggling to regain its political influence since the 2022 elections.

According to Kioni, the meeting also focused on strengthening the party’s internal structure and expanding its grassroots presence.

The party leadership resolved to revamp operations across the country by reopening branches, recruiting new members, and reconnecting with loyal supporters.

The leadership emphasized that these efforts are part of a long-term strategy to reestablish Jubilee as a major player in the national political arena.

During the same meeting, the party also filled several key leadership positions.

Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama was named the Whip of the National Assembly, while Senator James Lomenen was appointed as the Senate Whip.

These appointments are part of a wider plan to ensure effective coordination between Jubilee legislators in both Houses of Parliament.Matiang’i’s rise within the party has been gradual but strategic.

On September 26, during the National Delegates Conference graced by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Matiang’i’s presence signaled growing unity within the party and confirmed months of speculation about his political future.

Insiders have revealed that Uhuru has been quietly mentoring him to restore the party’s lost influence and prepare for the 2027 presidential race.

Dr. Matiang’i, known for his strict work ethic and strong leadership record during his time in government, has never held an elective position before.

However, his decision to leave his role at the World Bank Latin America office to focus entirely on his presidential bid has been seen as a sign of serious political intent.

With Jubilee now rallying behind him, Matiang’i faces the task of rebuilding the party’s trust among voters and convincing Kenyans that the former ruling party can still offer a fresh and credible alternative.

His appointment as Deputy Party Leader and endorsement as the presidential candidate have already injected new energy into the party’s base, setting the stage for a fierce political contest in 2027.
