From fierce critic to quiet watcher Sifuna changes tune on county oversight

Sifuna had built his image as one of the loudest critics of Nairobi leadership, constantly questioning why the county was not delivering on its promises.

His words always circled around the governor’s slogan “Lazima Nairobi iWork,” which he said was far from reality.

But since April 29, 2025, his voice has strangely faded, leaving many people asking if the senator has changed his approach or if the county has finally started performing.

On that day, he joined Governor Johnson Sakaja and other leaders at City Hall for a meeting about floods that had crippled Nairobi.

Roads were blocked and residents were stranded, and the urgency forced the two rivals to sit together. While they publicly exchanged jokes, in private they were seen having a close discussion.

It was after this encounter that Sifuna’s tone shifted, as though the meeting softened his stance on the governor. In the weeks that followed, several attempts were made to impeach Sakaja, but Sifuna stayed away from the heated debates.

The most recent motion collapsed after intervention by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, who urged ward representatives to drop it.

While other senators openly criticized Raila’s move, Sifuna kept quiet and refused to take sides.

Even when Sakaja caused uproar in March by promising pupils a chapati-making machine, critics like Babu Owino led national outrage.

Yet Sifuna, who once thrived on such moments, said nothing.

The silence continued in Senate committees where governors usually face tough questioning.

In a recent session on Nairobi’s water problems, he avoided pressing Sakaja in the way he used to.

For a politician known for accountability, this sudden retreat is striking.

Whether he has chosen to give Sakaja room to work or has been politically tamed remains the lingering question among Nairobians.
