Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s statement that Kenyans want President William Ruto to serve just one term has stirred up the country’s political scene.
The comment came shortly after Ruto told the opposition to come up with a proper plan instead of only shouting that he must go.
Gachagua’s words have been seen by many as the clearest sign yet that there is serious trouble brewing within the Kenya Kwanza alliance, and people are now openly talking about a deepening rift in the ruling coalition.
Many Kenyans reacted strongly to the remarks, each interpreting them differently.
One citizen, Akhonya, hit back with a clear message: “We certainly want Ruto gone, but where is your alternative agenda?”
Others picked up on what they believed to be a tribal tone in the statement. A social media user calling themselves Maasai Mara said, “Not all Kenyans just most Kikuyus,” suggesting that Gachagua may be speaking for his ethnic base rather than the entire country. Zena, on the other hand, didn’t hold back, saying, “He is finally admitting his real mission to cut Ruto’s presidency short.

“Not everyone welcomed Gachagua’s bold claim. Joseline openly challenged him, saying he should focus on getting back his lost position as deputy president before pretending to speak for Kenyans.
That only added more heat to an already burning debate. Another user, Kimwele, sarcastically said, “Kenyans from Wamunyoro home,” in a clear jab at the ethnic tone that some people felt Gachagua’s comments carried.
Political experts believe this is the most direct internal challenge to Ruto’s 2027 ambitions. Some see Gachagua’s statement as a last-ditch effort to stay relevant after being pushed out of the government.
Others think it’s a smart move to position himself as the face of the opposition ahead of the next elections. Either way, his comments have shaken the foundation of Kenya Kwanza.
The big question now is whether this marks the beginning of a serious political fight ahead of 2027. Will Ruto’s allies hit back? Will Gachagua gather enough support to take the fight to the president?
Kenya’s politics are clearly entering a new and unpredictable phase. The political temperatures are rising, alliances are shifting, and the battle lines are already being drawn. Gachagua’s statement has changed everything. The race for 2027 has officially begun, and the presidency of William Ruto is suddenly under serious pressure.
