Kennedy’s mother breaks silence on Ruto’s call and the justice that never came

The mother of Kennedy, one of the young men who was killed during last year’s Gen Z protests, has shared an emotional story about a phone call she once received from President William Ruto.

She spoke during a prayer service held at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, where Kenyans gathered to honour the lives lost during those protests. The service brought together families, leaders, and citizens who have continued to seek justice for those who died while standing up for their rights.

As she stood before the congregation, Kennedy’s mother explained how she was contacted by Dennis Itumbi, who is known to be close to the President.

Itumbi told her that President Ruto wanted to speak with her.

A few moments later, she found herself on the phone with the President. During that call, the President expressed his condolences and promised her that they would meet in person.

He assured her that they would sit down and talk about how her son’s case would be handled and how justice would be delivered.

At that moment, she said, her heart felt some comfort and a little hope returned. She believed something would be done to honour her son’s life and memory.

But a year later, nothing has happened. No meeting ever took place, and no efforts were made to give her justice.

With sadness in her voice, she shared how painful it is to be left in silence after such a promise from the country’s leader.

She said the lack of follow-up feels like a betrayal not just to her but to all the other families who lost loved ones.

Kennedy, according to his mother, was the light of their family. He was a young man full of energy, dreams, and determination. His death left a deep hole in their lives.

He had so much to offer, and his future looked bright. Now, all they have are memories and unanswered questions.

She asked Kenyans to keep praying for her and for the other families still grieving. Her message was clear and heartfelt. It came at a time when many people are still demanding truth and justice for the lives lost.

The event at the cathedral was held under the theme “Lest We Forget,” reminding the country not to move on too quickly. Political leaders, civil society members, and other mourners echoed the same message justice must be served.

Kennedy’s mother ended by saying that true healing cannot begin without justice, and that the promises made to them should not be left behind or ignored.
