Wanga accused of prioritising PR as frustrated deputy walks away

Governor Gladys Wanga now finds herself at the center of growing political tension in Homa Bay following the resignation of her deputy, Joseph Oyugi Magwanga.

His decision to step down on February 26, 2026, has raised fresh questions about leadership, teamwork, and service delivery within the county government.

Magwanga said he could no longer continue serving under conditions that made it impossible for him to carry out his duties. For months, his office reportedly remained locked, his official vehicle was withdrawn, and he was left out of key county functions. He even sought help from the court, arguing that the treatment he was facing was unfair and unlawful.

In his resignation message, he stated that he did not see the need to continue earning a public salary while he had no meaningful role to play in serving residents.

The fallout is said to have roots in disagreements that began soon after the 2022 elections. The two leaders were brought together under ODM with support from Raila Odinga, but over time, their working relationship appeared to weaken.

With that political bridge no longer active, the differences seem to have deepened instead of being resolved.

Critics of Wanga describe her leadership style as firm and highly controlled. Some believe Magwanga was gradually pushed aside after the election victory.

Supporters of the former deputy claim that instead of focusing fully on development, the county leadership has paid too much attention to public image and media presence. They argue that several pressing issues still need urgent attention.

In many parts of Homa Bay, roads remain in poor condition, health facilities face shortages, schools require more support, and farmers continue to wait for timely assistance. Residents say they want to see steady improvements rather than frequent publicity events.

Wanga has also faced complaints from a section of local leaders who feel their concerns are not always taken seriously.

In political circles, there is talk that disagreements within the county government have made teamwork difficult. The decision to remove Magwanga from certain responsibilities, including agriculture, added to the tension and fueled speculation about internal power struggles.

With Magwanga now planning to challenge her in the 2027 elections, the political landscape in Homa Bay could become even more competitive.

The recent events have shifted focus away from service delivery, and there is growing pressure on Wanga to show clear progress in the months ahead.
