TSC adjusts interview schedule to honour late Raila Odinga’s memorial holiday

The Teachers Service Commission has announced a change in the timetable for teachers’ promotion interviews across the country after the government declared Friday, October 17, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late Raila Odinga.

The decision has affected thousands of teachers who were expected to attend interviews on that day.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 17, the commission said the planned interviews would not proceed as scheduled because of the national holiday.

The TSC noted that it respects the government’s directive and that all activities set for that day would be suspended.

The interviews have now been pushed forward to allow teachers and officials to observe the day of mourning.

According to the statement, the postponed sessions will now take place between Tuesday, October 21 and Thursday, October 23, 2025.

The commission further explained that regional directors will issue new communication to all affected teachers, providing updated timetables and logistical arrangements.

This move is aimed at ensuring that no teacher misses their chance due to the sudden change.

The interviews are part of a regular TSC process that evaluates teachers for promotions across different grades and levels.

The exercise is designed to reward performance, experience, and professionalism among educators.

Teachers who qualify through the process move to higher job groups and receive new responsibilities in schools.

The current round of interviews followed an earlier advertisement by TSC on August 11, 2025, when the commission announced 21,313 promotional vacancies.

The application window opened on August 12 and closed on August 25.

After receiving applications, the commission reviewed submissions and published a list of shortlisted candidates in mid-September.

On September 16, shortlisted candidates were formally invited for interviews, with the commission giving them at least a week’s notice before the scheduled dates.

The first batch of interviews for primary school teachers began on October 6 and continued through October 10 at sub-county centres across the 47 counties.

In this phase alone, 47,449 teachers were shortlisted. The second phase, targeting post-primary teachers, started on October 13 and was set to run through October 24 at the county level.

During the same period, TSC also conducted interviews for senior principals and curriculum support officers, which were held at regional offices.

Despite the postponement, the commission assured teachers that the changes will not affect the fairness or integrity of the process.

All shortlisted candidates will still be given equal opportunity to attend their interviews on the new dates.

The TSC emphasized that communication through regional offices will continue to ensure that teachers are fully informed and adequately prepared once the process resumes next week.
