The recent High Court ruling against National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s majority decision in favor of Kenya Kwanza has brought fresh tensions within political circles.
The decision, which questioned the legitimacy of the Kenya Kwanza majority in Parliament, has sparked debate about how President William Ruto’s administration is handling the situation. Now, a statehouse aide has revealed that intelligence officials had warned Ruto against allowing Azimio to take control of the majority seat, as well as against any attempts to impeach Wetang’ula.
According to the Standard’s Monday publication, the statehouse aide stated that Ruto was given clear advice to do whatever was necessary to protect Wetang’ula and ensure Kenya Kwanza retained the majority leadership in Parliament.
The intelligence reports allegedly showed that any shift in power in Parliament would have led to a major political crisis, with Azimio likely to react aggressively in an attempt to reclaim its influence.

The aide noted that the advice given to Ruto was that he should be ready to trade anything for the majority leader’s seat and maintain Wetang’ula’s position as Speaker.
This revelation raises concerns about the political maneuvers behind the scenes to control Parliament. The struggle for the majority seat has been ongoing since the 2022 elections, with both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio laying claim to the leadership position.
Wetang’ula, who played a key role in determining Kenya Kwanza’s majority status, has remained a central figure in the battle for parliamentary dominance.
With the court ruling now challenging that decision, it appears that Ruto’s team is keen on preventing any shift in power.
The National Intelligence Service (NIS) reportedly warned that allowing Azimio to take the majority seat or letting Wetang’ula be removed as Speaker would have led to a major standoff.
The opposition, already frustrated with how the government has sidelined them, would have taken drastic measures to demand their share of leadership positions.
This could have led to protests, parliamentary disruptions, or other forms of political unrest that the government wanted to avoid. This situation also highlights the strategic importance of Wetang’ula in Ruto’s administration.
Keeping him as Speaker ensures that Kenya Kwanza maintains control of the legislative process, preventing any attempts by Azimio to frustrate government policies in Parliament. With the courts now challenging the Kenya Kwanza majority, it remains to be seen what steps Ruto’s administration will take to protect its grip on Parliament.
The coming days are likely to see more political realignments as both sides fight for control.
