President William Ruto’s recent phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has drawn attention to the growing concern over the illegal recruitment of young Kenyans into the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The discussion, which took place on November 6, 2025, touched on several key areas of cooperation between Kenya and Ukraine but placed particular emphasis on the welfare of Kenyan nationals who have found themselves entangled in the war.
During the conversation, President Ruto raised the issue of Kenyans who had reportedly been recruited under false pretenses to participate in the fighting. He expressed deep concern over the safety of these individuals and highlighted the urgent need for awareness campaigns to stop further recruitment.
According to Ruto, many of the young people involved may have been misled by agents promising lucrative opportunities, only to end up in dangerous war zones.
He urged President Zelensky to assist in the release of any Kenyans currently in Ukrainian custody, a request that Zelensky reportedly agreed to.
In his statement posted on X, Ruto described the discussion as “fruitful” and reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad. He emphasized that his administration will continue to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal recruitment into foreign conflicts, especially in areas affected by war.
Ruto also expressed gratitude to President Zelensky for his willingness to cooperate in ensuring the safety and return of affected Kenyans.Beyond the issue of recruitment, the two leaders also discussed matters of mutual interest, including agriculture, trade, and education. Ruto commended Zelensky for the upcoming Ukraine Food Summit, which he described as a crucial step toward promoting global food security.
Kenya, being a key agricultural nation, shares common ground with Ukraine in terms of food production and export potential, and the summit is expected to open more opportunities for collaboration between the two countries.
This development follows a recent statement by the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, which confirmed ongoing talks with Russian authorities regarding Kenyans caught up in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The statement noted that the government has been working to ensure the release and safe return of its citizens detained or stranded in various parts of the Russian Federation. It further explained that some Kenyans were lured into joining military operations through deceptive recruitment schemes that presented themselves as legitimate job offers.
According to the statement, some of these schemes involved agents posing as representatives of the Russian government. These individuals allegedly used falsified documents and false promises of financial rewards to convince unsuspecting Kenyans to enlist.
The complexity of the situation, it added, stems from the fact that the victims come from multiple countries and were drawn into the conflict through similar tactics.
President Ruto’s engagement with both Ukraine and Russia demonstrates Kenya’s diplomatic effort to safeguard its citizens abroad and prevent the exploitation of desperate young people seeking better opportunities.
His appeal to President Zelensky marks a step forward in ensuring that affected Kenyans are identified and safely brought back home. It also underscores the need for stronger public education on the dangers of illegal recruitment and the importance of seeking verified information before taking up overseas opportunities.
The conversation between the two presidents is not just a diplomatic exchange but also a warning to those behind the deceptive recruitment networks.
