Former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi has challenged President William Ruto’s leadership by raising tough questions about fairness in handling senior officials.
In a statement made on Tuesday, Havi asked why Eliud Lagat is still holding office while others like George Kinoti and Hillary Mutyambai were removed without hesitation.
He said if Ruto was quick to fire Kinoti and Mutyambai, then Lagat should not be treated differently.
According to Havi, President Ruto should have already requested Lagat to step down, especially given the controversies surrounding him.
He said anything less than that shows weakness and unfairness in the president’s decisions.
His remarks have sparked conversations across the country, with many Kenyans now questioning the kind of leadership being practiced.
When President Ruto took office, he dismissed Kinoti and Mutyambai early on, saying that reforms in the security sector were necessary and that those responsible for past failures had to go.
Havi now says that same rule should apply to Lagat, who faces growing criticism for his role in several questionable actions.
He believes protecting Lagat sends the wrong message to Kenyans about who gets held accountable and who doesn’t.
Many Kenyans on social media have supported Havi’s stand. They feel that leaders should not pick and choose who faces consequences.
If some officials are fired for misconduct or failure, then others in similar positions should also face the same treatment when issues arise.
This feeling of unfairness has been growing, especially as some leaders seem to be shielded despite public outcry.
Havi warned that such double standards damage the president’s image and weaken public trust in his leadership.
He said justice and accountability should not depend on who someone knows or their connections to power. If Ruto wants to be taken seriously as a reformer, he must show that all public officials are treated equally, regardless of their position or relationship with him.
The pressure is now mounting for President Ruto to act. Many Kenyans are watching closely to see if he will address the concerns raised by Havi or continue to remain silent on Lagat’s case.
