Questions raised over police response after fatal mob assault in Kawangware

A tragic incident in Kabete has left a family and community in shock after a young man lost his life following a mob attack in Kawangware.

The 25 year old, identified as Wesley Matekwa, was reportedly heading home after watching a football match in the Congo area when events took a deadly turn late at night.

Early reports suggest that Matekwa was confronted by two women who allegedly robbed him of his mobile phone.

Witnesses claim that when he tried to follow them and recover his property, the women raised an alarm accusing him of theft.

People nearby responded quickly to the shouting and turned against him without confirming what had happened.

He was beaten by the crowd and later his body was set on fire during the chaos.

Many disturbing videos and images from the scene circulated online, sparking anger and debate among members of the public.

Initial accounts from some witnesses said the mob believed Matekwa had stolen a phone from the women at around 10 p.m. last month.

However, his relatives and friends strongly dispute this version of events and say he was the victim of a misunderstanding.

Family members say he had just watched an Arsenal versus Manchester United match at a local entertainment spot before beginning his journey back to the Mayers area of Kawangware.

A relative explained that he was running after his stolen phone when he was trapped and attacked by the crowd.

Another witness said that in video footage he appears to be trying to defend himself and explain his side but no one listened.

Investigators have also received information that a boda boda rider may have been waiting nearby while the two women confronted him.

Shockingly, witnesses reported that a police vehicle was parked only a short distance from the scene but officers did not intervene during the attack.

This has raised serious questions among residents and leaders.Friends described Matekwa as a hardworking young man who had a clean record and even worked at a casino.

Police say investigations are ongoing, with officers collecting statements and reviewing CCTV footage from nearby buildings.

The incident has renewed concerns about mob justice and the dangers of people taking the law into their own hands instead of allowing due process.
