Police officer charged with murder of Kitale Polytechnic student in Kiminini shooting

Shock and grief continue to grip Kiminini Sub-County following the killing of a 22-year-old university student, allegedly at the hands of a police officer.

The accused officer, David Omondi, was on Tuesday brought before the Eldoret High Court, where he faced a murder charge linked to the tragic death of Dolphine Mwangi, a student at Kitale National Polytechnic.

The incident took place on October 21, 2025, at Naree Trading Centre in Trans Nzoia County.Court documents reveal that on the fateful night, Omondi reportedly arrived at the busy trading centre riding a motorcycle and carrying a pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.

He encountered a group of students gathered at the location and is said to have questioned them about their presence there at that hour. Witnesses claim that when the students hesitated to respond, the officer suddenly opened fire, releasing three bullets.

One of the shots struck Mwangi in the head, leaving her critically injured.

Residents who witnessed the incident said panic broke out as people ran for safety. A Good Samaritan rushed the young woman to a nearby hospital, where doctors tried to save her life. Sadly, Mwangi succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.

The news of her death has sparked anger and sadness among fellow students, residents, and human rights activists, who are demanding justice for the slain student.

When he appeared before Justice Reuben Nyakundi, Omondi pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder. The prosecution requested that he be detained until the court determines whether he should be released on bail. The case was set for mention on November 27, 2025, when the court will give a ruling on the bail application.

Meanwhile, Mwangi’s family is still struggling to come to terms with the loss of their daughter, who they described as hardworking and full of dreams. They have called for a thorough investigation to ensure those responsible are held accountable. The case has renewed public concern over police conduct and the use of excessive force, especially against unarmed civilians.
