Police arrest anti-abductions Protestors despite valid notice

Three persons were reportedly arrested by anti-riot police personnel while demonstrating outside Mombasa Technical University (TUK).

Human rights activist Hussein Khalid confirmed the reports on Monday, revealing that the trio was caught and held for reportedly rallying against the country’s recent forced disappearances.

In the footage released by Khalid, police were seen assaulting a group of demonstrators holding placards before cornering and arresting them inside one of the police vans.

During the altercation, one of the demonstrators was heard asking the police, wanting to know why he was arrested.

However, the persistent officers continued their pursuit.

“What have I done? Which offence have I committed? Who is this guy arresting people?” questioned one of the victims.

While denouncing the act, Khalid urged for the trio’s quick release, noting that the police were told about the protests prior to today’s demonstrations.

“At least 3 persons have been arrested just now in Mombasa outside Mombasa Technical University. We demand their immediate release. Police were notified of the protest and they received and stamped the notification,” Khalid commented.

Moments before the incident, a force of police officers was observed patrolling Mombasa’s streets in an attempt to prevent citizens from protesting.

Addressing the press following the arrest of their fellow protestors, the Mombasa activists promised to continue their rallies until all those kidnapped in recent weeks were released.

The activists also accused police officers of interfering with their demonstrations, despite having obtained permission to hold them.

“The police officers have come here in large numbers and are claiming that we won’t demonstrate,” noted one of the protesters.

“We want to tell them that we have the right to protest as per the constitution and we will continue with it until all those who were abducted are released.”

A similar scene occurred in Nairobi, where a group of campaigners staged nonviolent anti-abduction demonstrations.

The protest footage showed a group of ladies dressed in sack clothes marching through the streets of Nairobi’s Central Business District.
