Gloria Orwoba, the former nominated senator, has always seen herself as a fighter. But these days, she is fighting a different kind of battle.
Once a member of President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), she is now one of the most vocal critics of the very people who put her in Parliament.
People are now calling her a “mole” for the United Opposition, and she is causing a lot of confusion in the political scene.
Orwoba was removed from her Senate seat. The official reason given by the UDA party was disloyalty and misconduct . Many believe the real reason was her decision to welcome former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i at the airport.
At the time, Matiang’i was positioning himself as a rival to President Ruto. By welcoming him, Orwoba had publicly sided with the enemy .
The party leaders decided she could not “play for two political teams simultaneously” .
But here is where the story got tricky. Even though she is out of the party, Orwoba insists that President Ruto personally is not responsible for her losing her job.
She claims she was removed by party officials, not by the President himself. However, this has left many Kenyans confused.
In a political system where the party leader is seen as the final authority, many are asking: How can the President approve everything else but not take responsibility for this?
It seems like a contradiction that is hard for ordinary people to understand.
Since her expulsion, Orwoba has not kept quiet. She has taken her fight to the courts, and she has won some battles. The High Court has previously ruled that her expulsion was not procedural, giving her a legal lifeline .
She has also been arrested trying to access Parliament, determined to prove she is still the legitimate senator.
Recently, she was spotted joining the United Opposition during their tour of the Kisii region. There, she told the crowd that she lost her seat because she stood with “their son,” referring to Mr. Matiang’i .
She is now asking the people of Kisii to “wipe her tears” by electing her as the next Woman Representative in 2027 .
She questions what President Ruto has gained by removing her, pointing out that the women’s agenda has not moved forward since she left .
Gloria Orwoba’s story is about a woman who refuses to disappear from politics quietly. Whether she is a victim of party tyranny or a traitor to her own team depends on who you ask.
