NPS breaks silence on alleged abductions and makes fresh claim on missing Kenyans

The National Police Service (NPS) has denied allegations linking its officers to recent abductions, maintaining that no person reported missing or allegedly abducted is being held at any police station across the country.

In a statement issued on Friday, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the service operates strictly within the Constitution and the law, dismissing claims that police officers are involved in enforced disappearances.

“The NPS does not abduct people. Its mandate is unequivocal: to maintain law and order, prevent and detect crime, protect life and property, and arrest suspects strictly in accordance with the Constitution and the law,” the statement read.

The police service said all arrests are documented in the Occurrence Book (OB), processed through the required legal procedures, and suspects are presented before court within the constitutional timelines.

According to the NPS, no police station in the country is currently holding any individual reported missing or alleged to have been abducted. It added that reports of missing persons continue to be investigated promptly and professionally.

The service further claimed that investigations into some reported disappearances had established that certain cases were deliberately staged with the intention of misleading the public and undermining confidence in the police.

It warned that appropriate legal action would be taken against individuals found to have engaged in criminal conduct relating to false reports or fabricated disappearances.

The NPS also appealed to members of the public with credible information on missing persons or alleged abductions to report the matter at the nearest police station to facilitate investigations.

The statement comes amid sustained public scrutiny over alleged enforced disappearances following the June 25 Gen Z anniversary protests.

It was issued a day after Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo also dismissed claims that state agencies were responsible for the reported abductions.
