Nakuru’s hospital in crisis while Kihika enjoys overseas care at the expense of her People

Susan Kihika’s leadership as the Governor of Nakuru County is increasingly under fire, especially due to the worsening condition of the county’s biggest hospital.

Nakuru Level Five Hospital, once seen as a crucial medical facility in the region, has now turned into a symbol of neglect and failed leadership.

Patients are reportedly sleeping outside in the cold, elderly women wrapped in lessos and thin clothing as they wait for attention in a hospital that can no longer accommodate them.

The pictures and videos shared by residents are heartbreaking, showing a crisis that should have never reached this point under a functioning county government.

This level of suffering happening under Kihika’s watch is not just disappointing it is a clear failure of her responsibility to protect and care for the people who elected her.

According to the report by Nation Africa, the situation at Nakuru Level Five Hospital is dire. A disturbing video shows patients being thrown out of the casualty ward by guards, forced to spend the night outside due to overcrowding.

This alone paints a grim picture of healthcare in the county. Yet, while Nakuru residents are left to battle the cold, lack of medication, and corruption within hospital walls, Susan Kihika was away in the United States giving birth in a modern facility with world-class services.

Her decision to deliver her baby abroad has angered many who now question her trust in the same healthcare system she oversees. If she can’t trust Nakuru’s hospitals for herself, why should anyone else?

How can a leader turn a blind eye to her own people suffering while flying overseas to enjoy privileges that most of her constituents can never afford?

The hypocrisy is even more painful when we recall how Kihika made promises during her campaign to improve public health services.

Her administration was expected to restore dignity to health institutions, but what residents have received instead is neglect. Despite unveiling multi-million shilling projects like the Rongai and Subukia hospitals, the core facility in Nakuru town remains in ruins.

Reports of corruption in the hospital’s laboratory and patients being detained over unpaid bills make it clear that the county’s health system is not just broken it is collapsing.

Worse still, the governor has remained silent. No press statement, no emergency plan, no visit to the hospital after the footage went viral.

It appears she has chosen to ignore the mess that continues to grow under her name. Public figures like Senator Tabitha Karanja have rightly criticized Kihika for this double standard.

Karanja mentioned the horrifying story of a woman who gave birth on the road in Kuresoi South due to lack of facilities an event that happened while Kihika enjoyed modern medical care abroad.

This stark contrast tells a painful story of inequality. Kihika’s silence and absence in moments of crisis have made many question whether she truly cares about the common mwananchi or if her loyalty lies elsewhere.

It is no longer just about healthcare this is about a leader abandoning her people.Kihika may have tried to excuse her absence by pointing to her maternity leave, but the public sees through it.

A governor is not just a title it comes with responsibility, especially during emergencies. Leadership is about showing up, listening, acting, and caring.

Right now, Kihika is showing none of that. Until she confronts these failures directly, apologizes to the public, and takes immediate steps to improve the situation at Nakuru Level Five Hospital, her legacy will be stained by this shameful period of suffering and indifference.
