Nairobi Traffic Commander Joseph Chirchir has announced the closure of several sections of Aerodrome, Lang’ata, and Mombasa Roads ahead of the next round of African Nations Championship (CHAN) fixtures scheduled for Sunday, August 10.
In a notice issued on Saturday, August 9, Chirchir stated that Aerodrome Road would be closed from the Madaraka roundabout to the Bunyala roundabout.
Lang’ata Road would also be closed from the Madaraka roundabout to Lusaka roundabout, but only on one side. Motorists using this section to access Nairobi’s Central Business District were directed to take Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road from the Mbagathi roundabout.
Mombasa Road would be closed on one side from the Lusaka roundabout to the Bunyala roundabout, with motorists heading to the CBD being diverted to Likoni Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass near Ole Sereni Hotel.Chirchir also outlined changes for motorists travelling from Nairobi CBD to Thika Road with the aim of accessing Ruiru, Juja, and Thika.
These drivers were advised to use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road instead.
For matatus ferrying passengers to the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, diversions would be in place through Ruaraka Baba-Ndogo Road and Ngomongo Road, leading to the Ngomongo roundabout.
Additionally, motorists heading towards the CBD from Thika Road were urged to use the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road.
Chirchir cautioned motorists to avoid Thika Road unless travelling to Kasarani Stadium.
The road closures come ahead of an important day in the CHAN tournament, with the third round of Group A fixtures taking place.
Kenya’s Harambee Stars are set to face Morocco at 3 pm in Kasarani, while Zambia will play Angola at 6 pm at Nyayo Stadium.
Kenya currently leads Group A with four points, secured from one win and a draw. In their last match, the Harambee Stars drew 1-1 against Angola despite playing with ten men for most of the game after Marvin Odhiambo was sent off in the 20th minute.
Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo are close behind, each with three points, while Angola has one point from a draw and a loss.
Zambia is yet to register a point, having lost their only match so far.
A victory for Kenya against Morocco would secure them a spot in the quarter finals with one game left to play.
This win would also guarantee them a Ksh60 million reward from President William Ruto, providing a strong financial and motivational boost for the team.
The traffic changes aim to ensure smooth movement and safety for fans heading to both Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium, as well as to manage congestion across key routes in the city during the matches.
