Gitonga Mukunji reveals chilling plot to kill him before his arrest

Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has finally shared his side of the story a month after his dramatic arrest in July, revealing allegations that point to a much darker plan than just a police operation.

Speaking on Friday, the MP claimed that there had been a plot to assassinate him, but the plan failed and those behind it allegedly opted to arrest him instead.

According to Mukunji, his own investigations uncovered a shocking scheme where his car would have been filled with explosives, and he would be framed as someone trying to harm the country.

He alleged that after planting the explosives, the perpetrators intended to gun him down and use the accusations to justify the killing.

The MP went on to claim that when the plan did not work out, those targeting him came up with a new idea. He says they chose to arrest him and put him in a police cell alone, with an alleged plan to later burn down the station while he was still inside.

“I found out that there were plans to fill my car with explosives, then gun it down, with allegations that I wanted to harm the country,” he said.

“When that plan failed, they placed me in a cell, alone, with a plan to burn it down while I was inside.”

Mukunji’s arrest happened on Monday, July 7, after he was accused of playing a role in the chaos that unfolded during the Saba Saba protests.

The National Police Service confirmed that he was in custody. He remained locked up for three days before being released on a Ksh300,000 cash bail or an alternative surety bond of Ksh1 million.

Despite the official reasons given for his arrest, the legislator strongly believes his troubles are tied to political rivalry at the grassroots level.

He accused certain local leaders of working against him because of his political ambitions, claiming they view him as a threat.

The Manyatta MP is known for his open support of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and has been among the leaders vocal in criticising the Kenya Kwanza administration.

His political stand and outspoken nature have often put him at odds with sections of the government, something he believes is at the heart of his arrest.

Mukunji insisted that the recent events have not weakened his resolve. Instead, he said the ordeal has only strengthened his commitment to stand up for ordinary Kenyans.

He maintained that no amount of intimidation will make him abandon his principles or his fight for what he believes is right.
