Murkomen accused of turning Police guns on citizens as impeachment looms

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is facing growing pressure to resign or be impeached after making a controversial shoot-to-kill order.

Opposition leaders, led by Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, are demanding his immediate exit from office, saying his remarks are dangerous and unacceptable.

The two leaders were speaking in Githurai, where they had gone to console the family of Boniface Kariuki, a hawker who was recently killed.

His death has become a symbol of what critics are calling rising police brutality under Murkomen’s watch.Eugene Wamalwa did not mince his words, telling Murkomen that resigning was the least he could do.

He emphasized that the opposition was fully in support of an impeachment motion and called on all Members of Parliament to support it.

Wamalwa argued that Murkomen’s comments, especially in light of past violence, amount to an abuse of office and put ordinary Kenyans at risk.

Kalonzo Musyoka also condemned Murkomen, questioning whether shooting and killing young people was what the government meant by doing a “good job.”

Both leaders painted a picture of a government that is losing touch with the people and using force as a way to silence dissent.

The impeachment push was triggered by remarks Murkomen made after protests on June 25 that left many injured and several dead.

During a tour of Nairobi’s central business district, Murkomen directed police officers to shoot anyone who approached a police station to steal from it. He said,

“Anyone approaching a police station, shoot them; a gun is not a toy.” These comments caused an uproar, especially as tensions are already high due to cases of abductions, forced disappearances, and ongoing insecurity.

MPs aligned with the Democracy for Citizens Party, which is linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have also voiced concern.

They are reportedly preparing a formal impeachment motion against Murkomen. Wamalwa praised this move and encouraged Parliament to act with urgency.

According to Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, Murkomen has gone too far by issuing orders that violate the Constitution and put lives in danger.

He said Parliament must take action instead of standing by as things worsen.Even though the motion has not been officially introduced, the momentum behind it is growing.

Murkomen has been put on notice by the opposition and some MPs from within the government side. As the Interior CS, he is supposed to protect lives, not issue shoot-to-kill orders that fuel violence and fear.

With public trust in security agencies already low, many now feel that Murkomen is adding fuel to the fire. The coming days will determine whether Parliament will act or allow such dangerous directives to go unpunished.
