Kindiki defends Ruto’s record, blames Covid-19 for economic woes

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa visited Machakos alongside other Kenya Kwanza leaders and asked locals to ignore the politics of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

They described him as a leader who only brings division among Kenyans. Kindiki, who was on a two-day trip in Ukambani, spent time with women’s groups across Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni counties.

His main message was that the government is focused on development and economic growth, not unnecessary political fights. The Deputy President spoke about the importance of the bottom-up economic model, saying the government is serious about helping common citizens.

He reminded young people not to follow leaders whose aim is personal gain rather than helping the country. Kindiki said the economy was already struggling when President William Ruto took over. He explained that during the years 2020 and 2021, Kenya and the rest of the world were hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to him, businesses closed, matatus stopped operating, hotels shut down, and people were unable to go to work. He said it was the pandemic that ruined the economy and not mismanagement by the current government.

Kimani Ichung’wa joined Kindiki in attacking Gachagua, saying the former deputy president does not support unity and only seeks to destroy the progress made by others. He accused Gachagua of lying to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, calling him a dishonest political planner. Ichung’wa said Kalonzo deserves a serious political platform if he wants to compete for power and warned him against working with people who are only after political drama.

Ichung’wa added that Gachagua’s recent complaints about Members of Parliament uniting to help the vulnerable were selfish and out of touch. He told Gachagua to focus on building his own political strategy instead of always criticizing others.

He also challenged the Kenya Kwanza team to show real results in Machakos to prove that President Ruto’s promise of working without brakes for two terms is real. He said Machakos should be a good example of Ruto’s development plan in action.

The Kenya Kwanza leaders used this visit to show that they are united behind President Ruto and to distance themselves from any attempts to bring back old political rivalries. Their message was clear that the country needs progress, not confusion caused by people chasing personal power. They believe that Gachagua’s style of politics belongs to the past and has no place in today’s Kenya.
