The family of a deceased Homa Bay County supplier has once again brought public attention to the issue of pending county bills after accusing Governor Gladys Wanga of failing to settle a KSh10 million payment that they say was owed to their late father.
The family claims the delayed payment contributed to years of financial hardship and left them unable to comfortably meet medical and burial expenses after his death.
The fresh claims were made by Maina KE in a Facebook post published on Thursday, where he described the difficult journey his family has gone through while waiting for the county government to release the money. According to him, the outstanding payment has remained unpaid despite numerous follow-ups and repeated assurances that it would eventually be processed.
Maina said the family first reached out to Governor Gladys Wanga while his father was still alive.
At the time, they hoped the payment would help them clear growing hospital bills and continue paying for his medical care. However, he claimed that despite several appeals, the money was never released.
“We appealed to Governor Gladys Wanga when my father was still alive to at least pay us so that we could see him through hospitals and the accumulating bills. She ignored. Years went on with reminders and constant promises that never came to fruition,” Maina wrote.
According to the post, the family’s financial situation continued to worsen as medical expenses piled up while they waited for the county government to honour the outstanding payment.
Maina said the delays stretched on for years until his father eventually died without seeing the matter resolved.
He said the family once again contacted Governor Wanga after their father’s death, hoping the payment would at least help them cover the costs that had accumulated during his illness and after his passing.
Instead, they were forced to shoulder the expenses on their own.
“He finally passed on. Another statistic of Homa Bay County Pending Bills. We reached out again to her that now mzee is gone, the accumulating cost of pending hospital bills, mortuary and associated burial costs totals to KSh800K. We buried him,” he wrote.
Maina stated that even after the burial, the family has continued pursuing the payment but has yet to receive the money they claim is owed to them.
He expressed frustration over what he described as years of waiting, saying the outstanding debt has placed a heavy emotional and financial burden on the family.
In his message, he made a direct appeal to the governor to settle the pending bill, insisting that the family was only asking for money they had rightfully earned.
He also stated that political matters were not their concern and urged the county leadership to focus on honouring its financial obligations.
“We are not children of a lesser God. Just pay us our money. Your political career is none of our business,” he wrote.
The latest public appeal comes after an earlier effort by Maina to draw attention to the matter.
In that previous appeal, he shared screenshots of WhatsApp conversations that he said showed his attempts to seek payment from Governor Wanga.
He maintained that years of waiting and repeated promises without action had pushed the family into unnecessary suffering.
The case has once again raised broader questions about pending bills owed by county governments and the impact delayed payments can have on businesses and families.
For many suppliers, delayed settlements can lead to severe financial strain, especially when they depend on those funds to meet essential needs or repay loans.
In this case, the family argues that the unpaid money could have eased the burden of medical treatment and later helped cover funeral-related expenses.
The family says its only wish is for the county government to honour the outstanding payment.
At the time of publication, Governor Gladys Wanga had not publicly responded to Maina’s latest allegations.
