Junet Mohamed speaks on Babu Owino’s intention to lead ODM

Political discussions within the Orange Democratic Movement continue to attract attention as leaders position themselves ahead of future elections. Recent remarks by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed have added to the debate, especially on questions of party leadership, alliances, and trust among political players.

Junet has played down suggestions that Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is eyeing the top leadership position in ODM. According to him, while Babu is a strong and energetic politician, the current party structures do not support his rise to party leader.

He noted that ODM has clear systems and traditions that guide leadership transitions, and these systems are not easily changed by individual ambition.

However, Junet acknowledged that Babu Owino has political strength and could be well placed to compete for the Nairobi governor’s seat in the future.

The Suna East MP also addressed claims that he mismanaged funds during Raila Odinga’s 2022 presidential campaign.

He firmly dismissed the reports, describing them as misleading and untrue. Junet explained that money donated by former President Uhuru Kenyatta was not under his personal control.

He said the funds were handed over to Muhoho Kenyatta, who was overseeing party-related financial matters at the time. Junet maintained that the campaign resources were handled through agreed party channels.

Speaking on the political situation, Junet said ODM and its leaders, including Dr Oburu Odinga, are ready to engage with many political actors as the country prepares for the next General Election.

However, he made it clear that the party is not open to working with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

He did not go into detail but suggested that trust and political values are key in choosing allies. On the other hand, Rigathi Gachagua has urged ODM to consider joining forces with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka under the Patriotic Front. He warned that President William Ruto could betray the Luo community, similar to what he claims happened to leaders from the Mount Kenya region.

Rigathi called on Kenyans to unite ahead of the elections, saying Mount Kenya voters are now more cautious and may support a common political direction.

These exchanges are part of the growing political tension and realignments as leaders prepare for the next phase of Kenya’s politics.
