Haiti crisis deepens: Kenyan police officer dies in deadly gunfight

A Kenyan police officer has died during an operation in Ségur-Savien, Haiti. He was part of the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission, a team sent to help fight the growing problem of gang violence in Haiti.

The officer lost his life while responding to an attack in a region known for heavy gang activity. His team was involved in a fierce gunfight, and despite efforts to save him, he did not survive.

Haiti has been struggling with extreme violence, especially since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. Armed gangs have taken control of most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and many other areas. This has forced more than a million people to leave their homes.

The situation has also made food scarce, and many people are struggling to survive. The rising violence has made it difficult for health services to operate, and even commercial flights have been disrupted.

To help restore order, the United Nations approved the deployment of the multinational mission in 2023, with Kenya leading the efforts. By mid-2024, Kenya had sent over 400 officers, and in early 2025, another 217 officers were deployed. The mission’s goal is to assist the Haitian police in fighting the gangs and bringing peace to the country.

However, the mission has faced many challenges. The gangs are well-organized and heavily armed. In one major operation, officers raided the base of Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, a powerful gang leader in Port-au-Prince.

Despite their efforts, he managed to escape, showing just how difficult it is to capture these criminals. The United Nations has suggested taking over the funding of the mission to ensure that it continues effectively.

The loss of the Kenyan officer is a reminder of how dangerous the situation in Haiti is. His death highlights the risks that security forces face while trying to bring peace to the troubled nation.

The international community will need to work together to stop the violence and help Haiti recover.
