Gov’t set to review SHA monthly deductions after public outrage

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki stated on Saturday that the Ruto administration is listening to citizens’ pleas to make Taifa Care’s monthly payments more affordable.

“Taifa Care registration is free. We will re-look at the Means Testing Tool for Taifa Care to make sure all Kenyans, including boda boda riders, are not disadvantaged in monthly contributions,” said Prof. Kindiki.

He spoke during the Embu County Boda Boda Summit, which took place at Runyenjes DCC Grounds in Runyenjes town.

“Because we are a listening government, we will adjust the means testing mechanism to ensure the people of Kenya are comfortable with the contributions and the services offered by the government,” the Deputy President added.

So far, 18.5 million Kenyans have registered with SHA, a huge increase from the total number under NHIF.

The DP stated that efforts are being intensified to raise the number so that all eligible Kenyans are included in the system.

“SHA registration has been received very well by Kenyans. We are keen on pushing up the numbers to ensure every Kenyan is covered by Taifa Care,” he noted.

The DP said it was time to focus on improving the lives of all Kenyans now that the economy was recovering as a result of President Ruto’s actions.

“We are not interested in supremacy battles or fights over who is popular or not. Our focus now is on development. Time for campaigns will come,” he said.

The DP stated that the administration would restart all delayed projects in Embu, including roads, water, power, and dairy, among others, which are critical to the county’s growth.

The Boda Boda Summit was the first to gather together over 10,000 riders in Embu, with the goal of improving their income and operations throughout the county.

The Deputy President also unveiled the Embu Boda Boda Strategic Plan 2024-2027, a road plan for sector growth and regulation.

He also introduced the Embu Boda Boda Riders Information Management System, a county-wide database for tracking and managing boda boda operator information.

Furthermore, the Deputy President stated that the government is implementing policies that will benefit them and all Kenyans.

“I encourage Boda Boda riders to join Saccos to be in a better position to improve their lives,” he said. “I appeal to the other governors to emulate Governor Mbarire and make sure boda boda riders in their counties form saccos for their benefit.”

The Deputy President also lauded Governor Cecily Mbarire’s leadership in moving the county forward.

The Governor stated that they will work closely with the Ruto government to improve the fortunes of the riders and county people.
