Governor Sakaja transfers key Nairobi services to national government

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has officially handed over several key county functions to the national government, a move that signals closer coordination between city authorities and state agencies.

The decision, announced on Monday, February 10, 2026, comes amid growing demands for improved service delivery in the capital, particularly in sectors such as transport, health, and infrastructure development.

During a press briefing at City Hall, Governor Sakaja emphasized that the transfer of functions is intended to streamline operations and ensure that residents receive efficient services.

“This collaboration is about putting Nairobians first. Some of these functions require national oversight and resources that only the central government can provide,” Sakaja said.

Among the areas affected are road maintenance, traffic management, and certain public health programs.

Officials say the national government will now take direct responsibility for oversight and implementation, while the county will maintain a supervisory and advisory role to ensure local priorities are addressed.

Political analysts view the move as a strategic step ahead of the 2027 General Election, noting that closer alignment with the national government may help Nairobi secure more funding and accelerate critical projects.

“Governor Sakaja is positioning the city to benefit from national support, which is essential for a rapidly growing metropolis like Nairobi,” said political analyst Dr. Faith Mwangi.
