Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti led the county administration in installing CCTV cameras in county hospitals on Tuesday, February 4, to combat medicine theft and financial mismanagement. While supervising the activity, Ndeti warned of serious repercussions for those caught in the act, as the county seeks to put an end to the epidemic that has destroyed Machakos’ healthcare system.
“The bad behaviour of stealing medicines will soon come to an end. Some people thought they were so clever, they knew all the nooks and crannies in our hospitals, the ‘dark corners’,” Ndeti stated.
“I have found all the dark corners and put CCTV cameras. With these cameras, the daily operations of our hospitals will run smoothly. “If we lose medicines and money it becomes hard for me to promote our doctors, nurses and county workers,” she added.
Furthermore, Ndeti stated that the decision to install the cameras will go a long way toward protecting the county’s medical coffers during the country’s present economic downturn.
“As a government, we have to be very prudent as life has become hard and we must look after our money and safeguard it,” she noted.
The first-time governor warned people against stealing drugs and mismanaging cash, saying she would work around the clock to safeguard the safety of the county’s health sector.
“To the persons who are playing with the funds of Machakos county, be warned. You will be seeing me here (Machakos hospitals) almost every other day to ensure that all systems are working as expected,” Ndeti affirmed.
Ndeti’s decision came after five county government employees were detained last year for stealing various drugs worth Ksh30,745 from Itunduimuni health facility in Masinga.
Four of the five, including a clinical officer, a nurse, a watchman, and a cleaner, were charged in court and released on a Ksh100,000 bond.
Ndeti, who was making her speech at Machakos Level 5 Hospital, revealed intentions to construct a level 3 facility within the hospital to cater to walk-ins and relieve the pressure on the Level 5 hospital.
“To enhance efficiency in service delivery for the rapidly growing urban population in Machakos town, my administration will open a Level 3 facility within Machakos Level 5 Hospital to cater for walk-ins,” she expressed.
“Going forward, Machakos Level 5 will only handle referrals from our Level 4 facilities.”
