The race for the Mathira parliamentary seat ahead of the 2027 General Election is already attracting attention after a new digital survey by Mwelekeo Insights revealed how residents currently view the leading candidates.
The opinion poll, conducted in Mathira Constituency in Nyeri County, suggests that the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has established a strong early presence, with its candidates receiving the largest share of voter support.
According to the survey, Eng. Maina Gateru is the preferred candidate, securing 48 percent of the support from respondents.
His performance places him comfortably at the top of the rankings, giving him a significant lead over the rest of the field. The findings indicate that he currently enjoys broad backing among voters as the constituency begins to focus on the 2027 contest.
Solomon Maina, who is also seeking the seat on a DCP ticket, follows in second place with 34.1 percent.
Together, the two candidates account for more than 80 percent of the support recorded in the survey, highlighting the party’s strong influence in the constituency at this stage.
Further down the rankings, Peter Githinji, popularly known as “Tropical” and also representing DCP, received 7.3 percent.
Eric Wamumbi of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) came next with 5.7 percent.
Dominic Muraya, another DCP candidate, secured 4.1 percent, while Dennis Kibugi Mwaniki of Jubilee recorded 0.8 percent.
Daniel Kiige, also associated with DCP, did not register any support in the poll.
Current Standing
The survey paints a picture of a race where two candidates have clearly separated themselves from the rest of the field. Eng. Maina Gateru holds a comfortable lead, but Solomon Maina remains within striking distance, making him the closest challenger based on the current numbers.
The remaining candidates have a considerable gap to close if they hope to become more competitive before the election.
What the Survey Means
The findings suggest that DCP currently enjoys a strong advantage in Mathira, with several of its candidates attracting voter support.
However, opinion polls only reflect public sentiment at the time they are conducted. Political dynamics can change as campaigns intensify, candidates interact more with residents, and key issues affecting the constituency become more prominent.
Development priorities such as road infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare, job creation, and opportunities for young people are expected to play an important role in shaping voter decisions in the coming months.
