A wave of online debate has erupted after an Instagram post by Italian billionaire Flavio Briatore appeared to suggest that President William Ruto quietly visited Dubai—at a time when his official public schedule showed him actively working in Kenya.
The unexpected post, shared by Briatore on Wednesday, quickly caught the attention of Kenyans on social media.
Briatore, a globally known entrepreneur and former Formula One executive, uploaded a photo showing President Ruto at his upscale venue, Lion in the Sun, located inside the Mandarin Oriental Downtown in Dubai.
In his caption, the 75-year-old billionaire said he had hosted President Ruto for a private dinner alongside international healthcare investor Kamel Ghribi. The image spread rapidly online, triggering questions about timing, travel, and transparency.
What raised even more eyebrows was the fact that, on the same dates referenced in the post, President Ruto was widely reported to be in Kenya, conducting official government duties across Western Kenya.
On January 6, 2026, the president was seen in West Pokot County, where he announced plans to list the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
He encouraged everyday Kenyans to take part in the upcoming IPO, noting that even modest investments would be welcomed.
Later that day, Ruto travelled to Mumias in Kakamega County to launch the second phase of the NYOTA programme—a World Bank-supported initiative designed to empower young entrepreneurs. Under the programme, nearly 50,000 youths are expected to receive startup capital, beginning with grants of KSh25,000.
The president also used the tour to address the growing concern over drug abuse and illicit brews, remarks that later fed into a multi-agency meeting he chaired at State House in Nairobi on January 7, 2026.
The apparent overlap between Ruto’s domestic engagements and the Dubai photo has fueled speculation online.
Some observers suggest the Dubai meeting could have been brief or conducted privately, while others are calling for clarification to clear the air.So far, no official statement has been issued to confirm or deny the timing of the Dubai encounter.
Still, the viral post has reignited conversations about leadership visibility, official travel disclosures, and how social media can unexpectedly shape national discourse.
