Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has come back into public discussion after the widow of slain teacher and activist Albert Ojwang revealed that she is still unemployed months after leaders promised to support her.
Nevnina Onyango shared her situation on social media, saying she has not yet secured the job that had been pledged to her during her husband’s burial.
Her response came after a follower asked whether she had been given the opportunity that was publicly promised.
Nevnina said she remains jobless and continues to search for work as she tries to support her young family. Her statement has drawn attention online, with many people questioning what happened to the earlier commitments.
Ojwang died in police custody in a case that attracted national attention and sparked calls for justice.
During his burial, several leaders and well-wishers stepped forward and made promises to help his family cope with the loss.
Among them, Sakaja had pledged to offer Nevnina a job in the county government once she completed her studies. He also said he would support the education of her child and assist the family more broadly.
Months later, Nevnina’s update suggests that little has changed. Her remarks have raised fresh concern among Kenyans online, many of whom are now calling on leaders to follow through on what they promised.
Some have pointed out that such pledges often bring hope during difficult times but are not always fulfilled.
Despite the challenges she is facing, Nevnina has shown resilience. She recently took part in a traditional ceremony that formally recognised her as a daughter-in-law in her late husband’s family. The event gave her a sense of belonging during a period that has been marked by uncertainty.
Her relationship with her in-laws has also been widely noted. She has continued to spend time with them and has been seen visiting her husband’s grave.
