Defense paints picture of Jeff Mwathi’s struggles before his tragic death

Lawyers representing Mugithi artiste Lawrence Njuguna, popularly known as DJ Fatxo, have told the court that the late Jeff Mwathi was suicidal.

Appearing before Milimani Magistrate Rose Ndumbi on Monday, August 11, 2025, Fatxo’s legal team made this claim while cross-examining popular Mugithi singer Samuel Muchoki, known as Samidoh, who had just given his testimony.

The defense, led by lawyer Duncan Okatch, asked Samidoh if he knew that his nephew had previously attempted suicide.

Okatch directly asked him whether he was aware that Jeff had tried to take his life in 2020 or 2021.

In response, Samidoh said he had no knowledge of any such incident. The lawyers went on to tell the court that Jeff had been living under a lot of stress and was facing many challenges in his life.

They pressed Samidoh further, asking if he knew that the separation of Jeff’s parents had deeply affected him.

The lawyer read out claims that Jeff himself had indicated the split had a big impact on him. Samidoh, however, said he was not aware of that either.

The defense team also told the court that on the last day of his life, Jeff had been struggling financially, to the point of asking for Ksh200 for bus fare to go for an interior design job and later requesting Ksh500 for a taxi as they moved from one entertainment spot to another. It also came out in court that Jeff had once closed down his business to go back to school but later dropped out.

Samidoh told the court he was not aware his nephew had left college.

Okatch summed up Jeff’s situation by saying the young man had been “going through hell.” The lawyers added that on the day of his death, Jeff had been drinking heavily from the afternoon and had mixed different types of alcohol.

They also brought up claims about Jeff’s relationships. While it was known that Jeff had a girlfriend named Faith, the defense said that on the night of his death, he was with another woman they also called his girlfriend.

This woman, they said, was picked up by a man named Karis, who arrived in a V8 vehicle and drove away with her to Quiver Lounge.

The defense claimed this incident left Jeff feeling devastated and unhappy.

According to DJ Fatxo’s lawyers, all these issues his personal struggles, heavy drinking, and emotional distress that night painted a picture of a young man dealing with deep personal problems, which they insist point to the possibility that he took his own life.
