Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah has sent a strong message indicating a shift in approach within William Ruto’s camp when dealing with Cabinet Secretaries.
Unlike during the era of Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment, Ichung’wah noted that there is no consensus on punishing JB Muturi, who has been accused of causing disruptions within the Kenya Kwanza government.
Speaking as quoted by The Star newspaper on January 17, Ichung’wah distanced himself from the remarks made by National Assembly Majority Chief Whip Silvanus Osoro.
Osoro had earlier issued an ultimatum to Cabinet Secretary JB Muturi, demanding that he resign, apologize, or face impeachment within seven days.
However, Ichung’wah took a different stance, asserting that it is not the duty of Parliament to punish Cabinet members.
Ichung’wah stated that Parliament’s primary role is to summon a Cabinet Secretary to answer questions and then provide recommendations to the appointing authority, who is the President.
He emphasized that lawmakers should not waste time on impeachment proceedings, which he described as unnecessary.
“Even those CSs who are in office today, we will oversight them, but we will not waste any more of our parliamentary time to impeach a cabinet secretary. CSs are not people to waste our time with,” Ichung’wah said, as quoted by The Star.
He further called on Cabinet Secretaries who feel overwhelmed or incapable of performing their duties to resign honorably.
According to him, this would save time for both Parliament and President William Ruto, allowing the government to focus on its development agenda without unnecessary distractions.
This difference in opinion within the Kenya Kwanza camp highlights growing internal tensions.
While Osoro appears keen on taking a hardline approach, Ichung’wah’s comments suggest a preference for restraint and adherence to the legislative role of oversight.
As these disagreements continue to emerge, they reveal the challenges of maintaining unity within the coalition.
