Babu Owino slams Gikomba Market demolition, demands justice for traders

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has strongly condemned the recent demolition at Gikomba Market, terming it inhumane and poorly executed.

The demolition, which reportedly took place overnight, left hundreds of traders counting losses as their businesses were reduced to rubble without what they claim was sufficient notice.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Owino criticized the authorities behind the operation, accusing them of disregarding the livelihoods of ordinary Kenyans.

He argued that Gikomba Market is not just a trading hub but a vital source of income for thousands of families who depend on daily earnings to survive.

“The government must stop treating Kenyans like disposable citizens. These traders deserve dignity, proper communication, and alternative arrangements before such drastic actions are taken,” Owino said.

Witnesses at the scene described chaotic moments as traders attempted to salvage their goods while bulldozers moved in under heavy security presence.

Many claimed they were caught off guard, despite earlier rumors of a planned demolition. Some traders alleged that they had received conflicting information from officials, leaving them uncertain about the fate of their stalls.

The outspoken legislator called for immediate intervention, urging the county government to provide compensation to affected traders and to ensure that those displaced are allocated alternative spaces to continue their businesses.

He also demanded accountability from officials responsible for authorizing the demolition.

Human rights groups have also weighed in, raising concerns about forced evictions and the lack of adherence to due process.

They have called on relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the demolition and to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

Traders have vowed to protest until their grievances are addressed.

The incident has once again sparked debate over urban planning, informal trade, and the balance between development and the protection of livelihoods in Nairobi.

The government is yet to issue a comprehensive statement addressing the concerns raised, but pressure continues to mount from leaders and the public alike.
