Babu Owino challenges Raila and Ruto for rescuing Sakaja from impeachment

Babu Owino, has strongly criticized the leadership of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, insisting that the governor deserves impeachment.

While speaking during an interview on Kameme Television on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Babu Owino said that Nairobi residents have been denied the basic services they deserve, particularly in the health sector, pointing to Mama Lucy Hospital as a clear example of neglect by the county government.

He argued that healthcare should be the top priority and not something to be sacrificed for politics.

Babu Owino expressed frustration over the poor state of the hospital, saying patients continue to suffer under unbearable conditions.

He claimed that some patients are forced to relieve themselves in public due to lack of proper facilities and that basic services such as X-rays require Ksh 1,000, locking out poor residents who cannot afford such charges.

According to him, the situation reflects a failure in leadership and is reason enough for the governor to leave office.

He insisted that politics should not come before the lives of ordinary people, urging leaders to first improve the living conditions of Nairobians before engaging in political games. His remarks came just days after a political storm surrounding Sakaja’s possible impeachment.

Earlier in the week, ODM leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto stepped in to calm tensions and prevent the impeachment from proceeding.

Raila held a meeting with ODM-allied MCAs at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation, where he persuaded them to temporarily suspend their plans to oust the governor in favor of dialogue.

President Ruto also called a meeting at State House with UDA-aligned MCAs, cautioning them against pushing forward with the motion.

Before the intervention, more than 70 MCAs from both ODM and UDA had signed in support of the motion to remove Sakaja, falling just short of the 82 signatures required to table the official impeachment motion at the Nairobi County Assembly.

The political negotiations eventually gave Sakaja a two-month grace period to reconcile with the assembly and address the concerns raised.

Babu Owino, however, rejected the idea of giving Sakaja more time, questioning what the governor could achieve in the remaining years of his term that he had failed to deliver in the past three.

His tough stand shows that pressure remains on Sakaja to prove that he can turn around service delivery in Nairobi, particularly in areas like health care, where residents continue to complain about poor services.
