Makadara MP aspirant Geoffrey “Pedeshee” Wauna organised and attended the finals of a vibrant local football tournament aimed at supporting and promoting talent mtaani.
The event brought together young footballers from different neighbourhoods, giving them a platform to showcase their skills while competing for cash prizes and the honour of being crowned champions.
The tournament attracted four community teams, namely Maziwa FC, Maringo United Youth, Mbotela Kamaliza and Gava FC.
The teams had battled through the earlier rounds and semi-finals before reaching the final day, where supporters gathered in large numbers to watch the young players compete for the top prizes.
Maziwa FC stood out during the tournament with a strong attacking performance, scoring four goals across their matches.
Mbotela Kamaliza also impressed in front of goal, finding the net three times. Maringo United Youth and Gava FC each managed two goals as the teams fought to remain in contention.
The final match provided a tense ending to the competition as the top two sides could not be separated during normal playing time. With both teams determined to take home the championship prize, the contest went to a penalty shoot-out.
The pressure was high as players stepped forward one after another to take their penalties. In the end, the team that kept its composure during the shoot-out emerged victorious and claimed the top prize of Sh200,000.
The runners-up received Sh150,000, while the team that finished third walked away with Sh100,000.
The fourth-placed side received Sh50,000.
After the final whistle, the organiser presented the awards and congratulated all the participating teams for their commitment throughout the tournament. He also praised the players for maintaining sportsmanship despite the competitive nature of the matches.
The event also served as a reminder of the importance of investing in grassroots football. Many of the players taking part come from ordinary backgrounds and rely on local competitions to get opportunities to develop their skills and gain exposure.
For some, such tournaments could provide an important step towards playing for bigger clubs and competing at higher levels.
The large crowd that attended the finals added to the excitement. Families, friends and residents filled the grounds, cheering their favourite teams and celebrating the efforts of the young players.
The performances of Maziwa FC and Mbotela Kamaliza in particular showed the attacking ability available within community football. Maringo United Youth and Gava FC also demonstrated determination and fighting spirit throughout the competition.
Beyond the cash prizes, the tournament gave the players an opportunity to build confidence, learn teamwork and gain valuable match experience. Such competitions also provide young people with an alternative to spending their free time without meaningful activities.
