A major scandal is unfolding in Kisumu County after government relief food meant for vulnerable families in Muhoroni Sub-County was allegedly diverted and taken to a private residence linked to the family of Governor Gladys Wanga.
The incident has sparked public anger and raised difficult questions about accountability, transparency, and the protection of resources intended for struggling Kenyans.
According to a police report from Masogo Police Station, officers acting on intelligence recovered hundreds of bags of government relief food from the home of the late Johana Nyasuna, Governor Gladys Wanga’s father, in Ngere Kagoro Sub Location.
The food was reportedly intended for the Deputy County Commissioner’s office in Muhoroni for distribution to residents of Chemelil and other vulnerable families in need of assistance.
The recovery included 300 bags of rice weighing 50 kilograms each, 250 bags of beans weighing 50 kilograms each, and 20 bags of Uji Mix weighing 25 kilograms each.
The sheer volume of the recovered food has intensified concerns among residents, who are now demanding answers on how such a large consignment left its intended destination and ended up at a private homestead.
The discovery has placed Governor Gladys Wanga under intense public scrutiny. While investigators have not linked her directly to the alleged diversion, many residents are questioning how government relief supplies could be delivered to property associated with her family without raising immediate concern.
The incident has created a political storm, with critics arguing that a full and transparent investigation is necessary to restore public confidence.
Police also recovered a Mercedes-Benz trailer, registration number KCG 240F, which is believed to have transported the food.
The vehicle reportedly belongs to Pontypridd Holdings. Authorities arrested the driver, identified as Charles Gichoki, together with a storekeeper.
Both are assisting investigators as detectives seek to establish who authorized the movement of the food and who instructed that it be delivered to the private residence.
Fresh claims have further complicated the matter. Information shared with investigators suggests the consignment was received through the offices of the Wangaya West Community Water and Sanitation project before being taken to the residence.
Questions have emerged over delivery records after a person identified as Albert allegedly signed for the consignment.
Members of the Community Based Organisation have reportedly stated that they do not know anyone by that name who is authorized to receive goods on behalf of the organisation.
These developments have deepened suspicion and increased pressure on authorities to identify everyone involved.
Residents are demanding to know who authorized the diversion, who approved the delivery documents, and whether additional individuals may have played a role in the movement and storage of the food.
The controversy comes at a time when many families continue to depend on government support to survive difficult economic conditions.
Relief food is purchased using public funds and is intended to reach people facing hardship.
Any interference with that process has serious consequences because it directly affects families that depend on such assistance.
For Governor Gladys Wanga, the incident presents a significant political challenge. Even as investigations continue, the discovery of government food at a property linked to her family has generated public concern and renewed debate about accountability among public officials and those connected to them.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Muhoroni has now taken over the case.
