The chairperson of the National Assembly’s Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations Committee, Belgut MP Nelson Koech, has criticized the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Head of Public Service for insufficiently vetting candidates nominated for diplomatic appointments.
Speaking in Nairobi at Parliament buildings, Koech expressed dissatisfaction following Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u’s decision to decline her nomination as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana.
Her scheduled vetting by the committee on January 10 was cancelled after she formally declined the appointment.
Ndung’u’s decision marks the second instance of a nominee rejecting this role, following Victor Mogaka Kemosi’s earlier refusal in April 2024.
Koech emphasized the need for thorough vetting and proper consultation before submitting nominees’ names to Parliament to avoid further embarrassments.
He urged the ministry and relevant authorities to adopt a more deliberate approach in identifying candidates genuinely interested in representing the country, stressing that such rejections not only undermine the President’s image but also embarrass the nation.
Koech called for caution and diligence moving forward to ensure nominees are committed to diplomatic service and capable of representing Kenya effectively.
