World Bank to Fund Kisumu Port and Lake Ring Road, Raila affirms

Progress continue to be made on various development programs launched in Nyanza region by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Rt Hon Raila Odinga. One such project is the Kisumu port. The World Bank has today confirmed that it will help finance the Kisumu port as well as the Lake Ring road.

World Bank Vice President for Infrastructure Makhtar Diop has affirmed the viability of the Port of Kisumu and the Bank’s commitment to funding it together with the Lake Ring Road and Maritime school in the area.

Kisumu airport beat expectations

Diop recalled the cynicism that getting approval of funding for improvement for Kisumu airport. Feasibility studies had indicated that the airport would handle only 200,000 passengers a year. Today, the airport has 800,000 passengers and the numbers are rising.

He was accompanied by Dr Donald Kibaruka, former Africa Development Bank President and Dr Francis Muraya, Senior Economic Advisor to President Kenyatta at a meeting with AU high representative on infrastructural development Rt. Hon Raila Odinga.

The entire delegation encouraged Kenya to support Kisumu Port as a regional project. They asked Mr Odinga to prioritize development of water ways as part of Africa infrastructure agenda.


Together they had an engaging discussion on various projects and initiatives they are funding on the African continent. They also discussed the Bank’s future plans and strategies to achieve them.

Greater plans

The Kisumu port is part of a plan to improve water transport via Lake Victoria to connect Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. It is expected to boost trade as well as tourism in the east African region. The World Bank has committed to help Kisumu town and neighbouring towns to grow. It also plans to fund a maritime school to be built in Kisumu county.
