Kelvin Kiptum’s death left a huge gap in the athletics world, but the biggest impact has been on his family, who are struggling financially.
Nearly a year after his tragic passing in a road accident on February 11, 2024, the money he worked so hard for remains locked away, causing frustration and distress for his loved ones. His father, Mzee Samson Cheruiyot, has been vocal about the hardships they are facing, blaming Kiptum’s management company, Golazo, and his agent, Mark Corstjens, for withholding the athlete’s earnings.

He believes they have neglected the family and failed to offer any financial assistance, leaving them to suffer while the funds remain inaccessible.
Kiptum’s achievements were historic, with his world marathon record in Chicago in October 2023 solidifying his place among the greats. His talent and dedication earned him millions, but his untimely death has exposed the difficulties families face when trying to access such wealth. The situation has been complicated by legal and financial barriers, with bureaucratic red tape delaying the transfer of funds to his rightful beneficiaries.
While the legal process is ongoing, the family continues to struggle, unable to benefit from the wealth their son accumulated. The Kenyan government has tried to step in, offering support to Kiptum’s widow and children. President William Ruto personally directed the construction of a house for Kiptum’s widow in Naiberi, Uasin Gishu County, ensuring that she and the children at least had a home before his burial. The government also promised further assistance, including job opportunities, to help them survive without Kiptum’s direct financial support.
However, these efforts do not replace the substantial earnings that remain inaccessible due to ongoing disputes. The controversy surrounding Kiptum’s frozen millions raises questions about how the estates of deceased athletes are managed.

Many families of sports stars face similar struggles when trying to claim what is rightfully theirs. Agencies and management firms often control the financial affairs of athletes, but when tragedy strikes, their priorities sometimes shift, leaving families in distress.
His legacy should not be overshadowed by financial wrangles, and his loved ones should not have to beg for what he rightfully earned.
